We are offering two talks (02/03 and 29/03) where we will analyse the multicultural Medieval Spain. We will talk about the Jew and Muslim presence in the Peninsula: its History, traditions, Historical Figures and their role in the development of Spanish History.

Under the name of Spanish territory for Jewish community, we will take a look at the role of the Jews Culture in the frame of Iberian Peninsula Middle Ages. We will offer a general overview of the main elements of the Jewish heritage both in Al-Andalus and the Christian Kingdoms of the north.

This talk wants to points the importance of the Jewish heritage and its marks on Culture and History of Spain and also the consequences of their expulsion. Also we want to stress the persistence of the spoken language by Sephardic Jews: the djudezmo, its relevance and persistence nowadays.

The documentary reflects the hopes, dreams and fears, of these transnational-families who, after being separated for nearly two decades, are able to embrace each other, share stories, strengthen traditions and begin to reconstruct their cultural identity. There are 4.5 million other U.S. citizen children who, like them, have at least one undocumented parent and are part of mixed-status families. Even though they are entitled to the same rights and freedoms as all Americans, many of these children are growing up with the constant fear of separation from their parents. In addition, never having met their grandparents or other family members, they don’t have a clear sense of who they are and their heritage. All of these things negatively impact their welfare and that of society.

Mexico is one of the richest and most diverse culture of Latin-America where the heritage of Incas and Mayas is combined with European culture. Apart from colorful festivities like Cinco del Mayo and Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico also has a very rich gastronomy and breathtaking wildlife. All this and much more will be introduced to us by Luis, our volunteer from Mexico City. He will also prepare some traditional food for everyone to get a taste of Mexico.

A documentary that narrates the story of Antonio Moreno: the first Spaniard who achieved great success in Hollywood. “The Spanish Dancer” was also the title of the movie in which Moreno starred together with the legendary Pola Negri at the peak of his Hollywood career in 1923. This serves also as a starting point of this investigation into the life of the first Spanish born star in Tinseltown that takes us on a journey through the forgotten history of the Spanish cinema. There isn’t an extensive biography of Antonio Moreno, no one has ever made a documentary of his life. The challenge of this project consists of presenting more than a fact sheet, the author truly wants to find out who was this mysterious character, once a great Hollywood star, now so unjustly sidelined in the history of cinema.

Flamenco Quintet “Castaño” offers a spectacle of flamenco live music: singing, dancing and playing, performed by artists of Spanish, Russian, Hungarian, Cuban and Estonian origins. Castaño has prepared a special spectacle under the name “Abanico”, where traditional flamenco item, the fan, is used in on stage in different roles: as merchandise, as accessory, as part of a costume, even as means for comedy! All in a colourful and entertaining performance that goes beyond the format of a standard musical concert and wishes to be memorable for the audience.

“Castaño” project was born as a quartet in 2015. The name “Castaño”, which means “chestnut tree” in Spanish, was formed by the first letters of the names of all the members of the band at that time: KAlli, STefania, ANton and JOrge. In 2017, the percussionist Zsolt Bánhalmi joined the band. With this new formation and in that same year, they brought their music to Pskov, Russia, in a concert organized together with “Stuudio Duende”, a dancing studio that has been active in Tartu for 18 years.  In 2018 Castaño performed at the Tampere Flamenco Festival, also together with Stuudio Duende, being the first Estonian troupe that performed there in the history of that festival, the oldest flamenco festival in the Nordic countries.   In 2019, the singer of the band has changed due to personal circumstances, and Stefania Airapetjan-Adili has been replaced by Ruber Veliz.

He shows an interest in issues related to natural phenomena in our immediate surroundings, of a certain scientific nature, questioning subjective aspects of perception and investigating the alternative use of materials and production processes; confronting the preconceived ideas of the public and their expectations. His practice has been exhibited internationally in artistic centers such as the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporaneo, National Art Museum of China, ZKM and Ars Electronica; as well as at the VOLTA and ARCO art fairs. It is part of public art collections such as the Andalusian Center of Contemporary Art and also of scientific institutions such as the Science Museum of London and Science Museum of Barcelona. In parallel to his own production, his studio operates as a production facility focused on helping other artists, designers, and entrepreneurs to produce their projects.

During the talk Daniel will introduce his artistic practice and processes. Also, the projects from other artists, designer, and entrepreneurs that have been produced in his studio will be introduced, this way framing a conversation around art, design, and contemporary alternatives to the mainstream art market.

The aim is to introduce local artists to the international context and initiate an exchange of experience, skills, ideas and contacts. CONNECTORIUM is initiated and curated by an artist duo Varvara & Mar, who are the active residents of ARS Art Factory, in collaboration with Estonian Artists Association.

In this culture evening we will hear what makes it distinct both as a country and also language wise from our friend Sergio Carvajal-Rojas (AIESEC in Estonia). Sergio will also prepare some lovely dishes from his home country – arepas con hogao (pies made of corn flour) and arequipe (boiled condensed milk).

Marina and Orlando are in love and planning for the future. Marina is a young waitress and aspiring singer. Orlando is 30 years older than her, and owns a printing company. After celebrating Marina’s birthday one evening, Orlando falls seriously ill. Marina rushes him to the emergency room, but he passes away just after arriving at the hospital. Marina is a trans woman and for most of Orlando’s family, her gender identity is an aberration. So Marina struggles for the right to be herself. She battles the very same forces that she has spent a lifetime fighting just to become what she is now – a complex, strong, forthright and fantastic woman.

So if they bring samples of their work, sketches or just want to get feedback on how to implement a new idea, they could go over it together with the artist.

They dance rumba in Andalusia, they do it as well in Catalonia and they also move with rumba in Cuba. All are different rumbas and all have something in common. Our friend Hansel from Euphoria Studio, great Cuban dancer and expert in Cuban rumba will talk about these different dances, from flamenco to Latin rhythms and African roots.

Flamenco Quintet “Castaño” offers a spectacle of flamenco live music: singing, dancing and playing, performed by artists of Spanish, Russian, Hungarian, Cuban and Estonian origins. Castaño has prepared a special spectacle under the name “Abanico”, where traditional flamenco item, the fan, is used in on stage in different roles: as merchandise, as accessory, as part of a costume, even as means for comedy! All in a colourful and entertaining performance that goes beyond the format of a standard musical concert and wishes to be memorable for the audience.

 “Castaño” project was born as a quartet in 2015. The name “Castaño”, which means “chestnut tree” in Spanish, was formed by the first letters of the names of all the members of the band at that time: KAlli, STefania, ANton and JOrge. In 2017, the percussionist Zsolt Bánhalmi joined the band. With this new formation and in that same year, they brought their music to Pskov, Russia, in a concert organized together with “Stuudio Duende”, a dancing studio that has been active in Tartu for 18 years.  In 2018 Castaño performed at the Tampere Flamenco Festival, also together with Stuudio Duende, being the first Estonian troupe that performed there in the history of that festival, the oldest flamenco festival in the Nordic countries.   In 2019, the singer of the band has changed due to personal circumstances, and Stefania Airapetjan-Adili has been replaced by Ruber Veliz.

Talented flamenco guitarist and a good friend of Hispaania Maja, Jorge Arena will once again take us on a journey into the passionate world of flamenco. This time he will go through the most important aspects in the works of Camarón de la Isla and Enrique Morente, who became – respectively – the most important interpreters and the greatest innovators of Flamenco singing. This will be a chance to present the marvelous music of these two artists to all music-lovers in Estonia, as well as to introduce them to the peculiar aesthetics of Flamenco singing. At the end of the event there will also be a live performance by the signer Ruber Veliz who will be accompanied by Jorge.

Iberofest invites everyone to attend the Spanish Day in Viljandi!

At 16:00 we will show you how to prepare the traditional Spanish paella which will be prepared by the masterful chef of the Embassy of Spain, Mr. Ángel Alonso and of course, afterwards the participants will have a chance to taste it.

At 18:00 we will continue with the screening of the comedy “Requirements to Be a Normal Person“(Requisitos para ser una persona normal, Spain 2015). The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.

Synopsis:
Maria de las Montañas is 30 years old, she is a peculiar person and has one goal: become a normal person. But first of all she must discover what it exactly is. Which kind of person is she? Is she a normal person? What does exactly mean? That question goes deeper into her mind. After she lists every requirement, she is determined to fulfil them. She meets Borja, a boy obsessed with diets and losing weight. They will make a curious pact: she helps him to live an active and healthy live, and he helps her to meet her goal: become a normal person.

As a director and his crew shoot a controversial film about Christopher Columbus in Cochabamba, Bolivia, local people rise up against plans to privatize the water supply. Spanish director Sebastián (Gael García Bernal), his executive producer Costa (Luis Tosar) and all his crew are in Bolivia, in the Cochabamba area, to shoot a motion picture about Christopher Columbus, his first explorations and the way the Spaniards treated the Indians at the time. Costa has chosen this place because the budget of the film is tight and here he can hire supernumeraries, local actors and extras on the cheap. Things go more or less smoothly until a conflict erupts over the privatization of the water supply. The trouble is that one of the local actors, Daniel, is a leading activist in the protest movement.

The movie night takes place in room 307 of College of Foreign Languages and Cultures of University of Tartu (Lossi 3). Entrance free!

Iberofest presents a fine dining experience that honours the principals of zero waste cooking and sustainable consumption. The dinner will be prepared by Spanish chef Albert Franch Sunyer in cooperation with Estonian Chef Peeter Pihel and with the help of the teams from restaurants Nolla (Helsinki) and Ö (Tallinn). The one one-night-only dinner event will be Spanish themed and presents a taste of Albert’s roots, but at the same time the chefs will be using local products of Estonia and following the waste-free ideology.

Originally from Barcelona, Albert Franch Sunyer has worked in many Michelin star restaurants and currently resides in Helsinki, where he has worked in several prestigious restaurants like Chez Dominique, Olo and lastly as chef in Grön, Helsinki’s Restaurant of the Year 2017. He is co-founder of restaurant Nolla, the first zero waste restaurant not only in Finland, but in the Nordic countries. The idea of a zero-waste restaurant was born out of his frustration in the wastefulness of the restaurant industry. The restaurant offers experiences based on the best, local and organic products, without waste. Albert always works with local and seasonal ingredients produced by small local producers and avoids the use of packaging.

The menu will be created in cooperation with the renowned Estonian chef Peeter Pihel who has become the spokesperson of the zero waste principals in the restaurant business in Estonia. Peeter Pihel gets his creativity from the heritage of being born in an island. He uses to say “When you lack ingredients, you need to use your imagination”. And he’s done it well: after four Restaurant of the Year awards on his back from Pädaste Manor, he moved to work for the best restaurant in Sweden, Fäviken Magasinet. Nowadays you can find Pihel at the kitchen of Kotzebue Bakery & Charcuterie in Tallinn. For him, zero waste cooking is an ode to local produce, grown lovingly on small farms, and honouring the principles of sustainable and benevolent consumption.

Together they will join forces with the team of restaurant Ö, which focus also on using the freshest seasonal ingredients of local origin. The guests will enjoy a high quality fine dining experience while also embracing a greener economy, sustainability and more mindful use of the resources.

The dinner is open to public with limited seats and tickets can be purchased beforehand for the price on € 50.

El arte es Vida! DnD goes international! Bebe y pinta! On the 23rd of March, there will be a special Spanish Drawing Session in Hispaania Maja in honour of Iberofest 2019.

Some drinks, some snacks: a lovely lingering Saturday afternoon, drawing two beautiful Flamenco dancers posing for us in genuine outfits and fitting music! We are going to make your mind move to Madrid and make you forget it’s actually winter outside! De nada!

Especially for this occasion we will have some lovely Spanish wines, but no worries, there will also be our trusty Estonian TANKER beers as well to keep up the good spirits! It’s a 4 hour session, so to keep us going, the fine people of Hispaania Maja will serve us some authentic Spanish cuisine! ¡Buen provecho!

We’ve got drawing boards, some basic sketching material and heaps of sketch paper available for you to work with. But you can bring your own art gear of course also. Easels are welcome!

Maria has been the creator and director of “Nuestro aire” company since 2007 and “De Cobre” company since 2010. In both projects she participates as choreographer, dancer, singer and music composer. Since 2011 she is a member of Miguel Reyes Sextet and also creates “Ethnómada” with Trio Olivares. Since 2013 she is a co-founder of “Flamenco Nuevo“  project with the contemporary and experimental singer, Evelin Tóth. She currently lives in Madrid where besides of developing her actual projects, works as a flamenco dancer in the flamenco “tablaos” of the city like “Candela” or “Cardamomo”.

At her concert in Tartu, she will present her choreographic and music project of flamenco fusion music presenting material from her CD “De Cobre” (NarRator Records, 2017), as well as traditional flamenco music and dancing.
