MEXICAN PHOTO EXHIBITIONS:

“FROM THE KITCHEN TO THE EYE” AND “THE GODDESS MAYAHUELS WHITE LIQUER”

Two Mexican photo exhibitions from the Casasola Archive by brothers Agustín Víctor y Miguel Casasola. Capturing fascinating moments of the early 20th century Mexico, “From the Kitchen to the Eye” displays the kitchen, the dining room, as well as other dining spaces that are either improvised or related to different social events. Similarly, these photos portray the different protagonists behind the art of food, the collective that shapes the dining ritual; common women and men that aren’t ashamed to put the culture in their mouths, satisfying their gustatory predilections and social inclinations. The second exhibition, “The Goddess Mayahuels white liquer” shows the traditions related to the maguey plant An inseparable part of the Mexican landscape, and one of its derivatives, the pulque beverage, are considered important symbols of the Mexican culture. This exhibition emphasizes the intention of the brothers Víctor and Miguel Agustín Casasola, to build a documentary portrait of an era in which the use of pulque formed part of the everyday lives of a large sector of the Mexican world.

THE LITERARY LEGACY OF RUBÉN DARÍO, FATHER OF THE MODERNISM MOVEMENT

Conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of death of Rubén Darío (1867–1916), an influential Nicaraguan poet, journalist, and diplomat. As a leader of the Spanish American literary movement known as Modernismo, which flourished at the end of the 19th century, he revivified and modernized poetry in Spanish on both sides of the Atlantic through his experiments with rhythm, metre, and imagery. Darío developed a highly original poetic style that founded a tradition. Rubén Darío was Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, 1908.

The speakers will be Jüri Talvet, Kätlin Kaldmaa and Mariliin Vassenin.

Iñaki Sandoval (1974) is one of the leading jazz pianists of the Spanish music scene. His brilliant career as a pianist has taken him to perform concerts and master classes in Spain, Europe and America. He studied in Berklee College and University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Sandoval has performed and recorded with many musicians such as Eddie Gomez, Billy Hart, Bob Mintzer, Carles Benavent, Horacio Fumero, Peer Wyboris, David Xirgu, David Mengual, Joan Albert Amargos, Sizao Machado, Greg Badolato and many others. He has recorded four successful albums as band leader:  Sausolito (2005), Usaquen (2008), Miracielos (2011), Electric Trio Live (2015). Sandoval currently works as the director of the Viljandi Culture Academy of the University of Tartu and teaches in its jazz department.

Concert’s program will be integrated entirely by Iñaki Sandoval’s original music, presented in acoustic trio setting, featuring Peedu Kass on double bass, and Ahto Abner on drums. The essence of the music is built on the jazz tradition and standards, but with a creative contemporary and fresh approach influenced for other genres like classical, flamenco, or popular music. The trio setting lets the three musicians to interact with freedom and develop the music through the improvisation.

Most of the art we see and experiment today arrives to us through a screen. Some artworks have been created precisely for this type of distribution: they inhabit the network and feed from it, offering us a vision of a world immersed in a constant flux of information. These works thus become remote signals which allow us to discover the reality of a distant geographic zone, as well as to re-examine our own. This exhibition aims to present in Tallinn a selection of new media artworks created by artists from Spain and Ibero America that offer visitors a view of our globalized society by means of current digital technologies.

The curator of the exhibition is art critic and investigator Pau Waelder who has also worked as a curator for exhibitions like «Real Time. Arte en tiempo real» (Arts Santa Mònica), «Data Cinema» (Festival Media Art Futures), and «Extimidad. Arte, intimidad y tecnología» (Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani), amongst others. He is editor for the Media Art section of the art.es magazine and writes for ETC media (Canada). From 2011, Waelder is part of the curator team of the Art Futura festival.

THE ART MARKET IN THE DIGITAL ERA

The contemporary art market develops its activities on the Internet through online platforms and services that seek new ways of taking the art of the galleries to the collectors. However, new formats are being developed that question the traditional dynamics of selling art. Several artistic projects and virtual galleries configure the current landscape of the market and raise issues such as the nature of the artwork as a digital file, the role of the user as collector and access as a form of ownership.

The lecture is read in English and includes the presentation of the publication “How to Sell Online Art and Make Millions (of visits)” made for The Wrong Biennale (2015) and freely available in PDF format.

PRESENTATION OF THE ESTONIAN TRANSLATION
OF END OF THE GAME BY JULIO CORTÁZAR:

Kaisa Mari Ling speaks of Cortázar’s works and Siim Angerpikk reads extracts from the book.

In End of the Game (1956), his second collection of short stories, Julio Cortázar (1914–1984), one of the major figures of the Latin American boom, arrives to his essence: the game. This text could be the manifest of the author: the game as one of the objectives of the life and one of its most important components. In these stories Cortázar opens the door to the magical reality which can only be reached by taking part in the game.

Publication of the translation into Estonian has received support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Argentina and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.

“SPANISH SKECTCHES” music for saxophone
ALFONSO PADILLA (saxophone)

The concert includes a selection of music by Spanish authors starting from the classics like Manuel de Falla or Isaac Albéniz, but also cutting edge contemporary composers like Alberto Carretero, Juan Cruz Guevara or Santiago J. Báez, not forgetting the icon of Spanish saxophone, Pedro Iturralde. The selection offers something for every taste.

Alfonso Padilla (1976) is a Spanish saxophonist with great international prominence who has performed in different countries in Europe and the rest of the world. An eclectic musician, his musical tastes and interests encompass many diverse genres and styles, although Alfonso Padilla’s current work is mainly and evenly focusing both on the performance of classical and contemporary music, and saxophone teaching. Since 2006, he has been serving as Professor of Saxophone at the Higher Conservatory of Music “Manuel Castillo”, in Seville.

MEXICAN PHOTO EXHIBITIONS: “FROM THE KITCHEN TO THE EYE” AND “THE GODDESS MAYAHUELS WHITE LIQUER”

Two Mexican photo exhibitions from the Casasola Archive by brothers Agustín Víctor y Miguel Casasola. Capturing fascinating moments of the early 20th century Mexico, “From the Kitchen to the Eye” displays the kitchen, the dining room, as well as other dining spaces that are either improvised or related to different social events. Similarly, these photos portray the different protagonists behind the art of food, the collective that shapes the dining ritual; common women and men that aren’t ashamed to put the culture in their mouths, satisfying their gustatory predilections and social inclinations. The second exhibition, “The Goddess Mayahuels white liquer” shows the traditions related to the maguey plant An inseparable part of the Mexican landscape, and one of its derivatives, the pulque beverage, are considered important symbols of the Mexican culture. This exhibition emphasizes the intention of the brothers Víctor and Miguel Agustín Casasola, to build a documentary portrait of an era in which the use of pulque formed part of the everyday lives of a large sector of the Mexican world.

SPANISH CUISINE COOKING CLASS

Cooking course will be carried out by Ángel Alonso, the chef of the Embassy of Spain.

Coming form Galicia in northern Spain, Ángel has resided in Estonia for several years already, demonstrating his culinary talents working as chef in the gin bar Self and in pop up lounge Stalker during last POFF. In his native Spain, he has been awarded the title of the best tapas maker. Angel was brought up near the Atlantic Ocean where all sort of seafood is part of everyday meals. So it is not to wonder that he has a special place in his heart for seafood, which is also reflected in the menu.

Maximum number of participants is 25 persons. Participants will be divided in five groups, each responsible for one course. Price includes a welcome drink, tea, coffee, water and all the recipes.

The class is in English!
The price for one person: 40 Euros
The course starts at 17.45 and ends 22.00.

Wrinkles portrays the friendship between Emilio and Miguel, two aged gentlemen shut away in a care home. Recent arrival Emilio, in the early stages of Alzheimer, is helped by Miguel and colleagues to avoid ending up on the feared top floor of the care home, also known as the lost causes or “assisted” floor. Their wild plan infuses their otherwise tedious day-to-day with humour and tenderness, because although for some their lives is coming to an end, for them it is just beginning. “Wrinkles” is based on Paco Roca´s comic of the same title (2008 National Comic Prize).

Synopsis
Wirikuta is a sacred desert in Mexico. The indigenous Wixárika undertake a pilgrimage to this location, as one of their most important rituals. They consider it the navel of the world. This ancestral culture and its natural environment are now under threat because mining concessions for open air mining have been granted to companies to exploit gold and silver. Wixárica communities gather here, in ceremony against the mining concessions, in defence of the land. In this documentary we listen to their voices and accompany the ceremony as different ancestral rituals are celebrated and the world is reinterpreted through ceremony.

Alex Campos García was born in Madrid, where he studied audiovisual arts, photography, and took part in the squatting social movement. He studied performance arts, visual arts and documentary filmmaking in Lisbon. Alex works with indigenous communities, performers, autists, prostitutes, visual artists, children, choreographers, blind people, monks and other artists, producing dance and theatre shows, exhibitions, socio-artistic-community projects, festivals and films. In 2004 he created Nomad Eyes, a documentary film project with the intention of sharing the process of film making with people accross the world. Meeting different communities, he gives them the camera and encourages them to make films from their own point of view.

TANGO ARGENTINO CONCERT AT IBEROFEST, THE FESTIVAL OF IBERO-AMERICAN CULTURE IN ESTONIA

The Argentine singer Romina Bianco and the Estonian guitarist Heiki Mätlik will perform at the White Hall of the House of the Blackheads (Mustpeade Maja) in Tallinn on Thursday 31st March at 7 pm in a tango concert that you cannot miss!

Romina Bianco is a tango singer who started singing at the age of 8. She has performed in the most prestigious venues and festivals around the globe accompanied by tango orchestras and musicians.
Heiki Mätlik is a guitar professor at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre from 1990. He has performed in many European countries and made tours in Australia, USA, Canada, Japan, Argentina and China.
