Event Details
Spanish art was not familiar with landscape painting until the 19th century, when questions of Spanish identity and national image emerged. During the period of the country’s modernisation, opposing approaches to the representation of its land clashed: the idea of a bright and lively ‘white Spain’ and a bleak, serious ‘black Spain’, rooted in its cultural heritage. Between and alongside these poles, Catalan modernist painting blossomed at the turn of the century, bringing together the picturesqueness and colourfulness of the former and the intellectualism of the latter.

Film director Sebastián and producer Costa have decided to make a film about Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America. Bolivia has been chosen as the location, as it is the cheapest country in South America and has the largest indigenous population in South America. However, it seems that history is about to repeat itself, as in Cochacamba, the location chosen for the film, a Bolivian water war (April 2000) breaks out over the sale of water to a multinational corporation, which has pushed up the price of water to unaffordable levels for the locals. “Forbidden Rain is a film about filmmaking, but it is also an ambitious and successful combination of the intersections of religion, justice, politics and art. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the Spanish Film Academy and was an audience favourite at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Curator: Francisco Martínez.
Designer: Viktor Gurov
Artists: Anna Škodenko, Evgeny Fedorov, Eléonore de Montesquiou, Francisco Martínez, Sanna Kartau, Varvara & Mar, Viktor Gurov.
This exhibition is inspired by the library left behind in the School n. 1 of Sillamäe, an institution that was closed in 1999. Subsequently, the building hosted the ECOMEN Institute of Economics & Management for seven years before being abandoned.
In Latin, ex libris referred to anything that comes out of the books. In Medieval times, the term started to be used in relation to a book owner’s identification label. Now, the library has been intruded by a series of artists, re-appropriating its materials in a parasitical way.
The books are still present, alas they do not always make sense in the present. Nonetheless, their ideas and aesthetics keep on fermenting otherwise. Burden or delayed gift, the library is available for novel relations of exchange.
But what kind of knowledge is lost when a library disappears? How can we accommodate what does not fit in the present? And what can we learn by looking into the things we left behind?
A minibus Tallinn-Sillamäe-Tallinn is provided to attend the opening, on the 4th of May. To register, please contact: francisco.martinez@tuni.fi & viktor.gurov@artun.ee

Mark your calendar! Spanish writer Isaac Rosa will hold an open talk in Spanish.
Isaac Rosa’s novel, “Happy Ending” (translated by Marianne Ots), delves into the possibility of love in the contemporary world, as well as economic insecurity, the dream of living in the countryside, parenthood, blended families, sexuality, and fidelity. Rosa addresses these themes with a humanity that surprises with its frankness, ensuring they transcend passing trends. Metaphors imbue a sensitive poetry into what might appear as an ordinary story, while the dialogue between man and woman sets the pace of action and emotions, fluctuating from calm to intensity, rendering the text almost spatial. The narrative is presented retrospectively, with a reverse chronology, from the happy ending to the first encounter, traversing through the resolution of the relationship.
The novel commences with an epilogue, which you can read here.

You can’t miss the chance to visit “Illustrations of Plants from Spanish Expeditions,” an exhibition that not only highlights the artistic value of the illustrations but also their extraordinary scientific significance. Some of these plants are already extinct, and these images are the only evidence of their existence in this world, captured by talented artists over two centuries ago.
These collections originated from botanical expeditions in America, representing one of the greatest contributions of the Spanish Enlightenment and a pivotal aspect of the advancement of European science and culture in the 18th century.
This exhibition, as part of the Iberofest cultural festival, serves as a celebration of the cultural richness and diversity of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world for the Estonian public. Through it, we commemorate one of the primary contributions of Spain and Portugal to Europe, acting as a bridge between both continents, Europe and America, and highlighting the influence and shared legacy on this 9th of May.

France has more than 200 football clubs of Portuguese origin in its amateur leagues. FAMILLE FC is an Atlas made out of vignettes of some of these clubs that gradually reveals aspects of their origin(s); rise and fall movements; the topography where they develop; joys and setbacks, friendships and rivalries; the relationship with the country left behind and that with the host country; intergenerational relations and the role of women; work and migrant associations; and the inexplicable stubbornness of being Portuguese. Its underlying theme is the power of imagination as a tool to connect with the other. Indeed fantasy triggers our desire to explore the world, to learn about others, their circumstances and their stories.
The amazing works created by great artists, both Estonians and Spanis, feel at times naïve in their depiction of another country and culture but they are vibrantly alive with beauty and curiosity.

Event Details
Javier Marías has written 16 novels, won dozens of awards in various countries, and has been translated into nearly 50 languages. He has served as a professor of Spanish literature at the universities of Oxford and Madrid, and has written columns for the daily newspaper El País. Marías is also influential as a translator of English literature into Spanish, having translated works by Sterne, Faulkner, Nabokov, Salinger, and others. His novels previously translated into Estonian include “A Heart So White” (translated by Marin Mõttus, Varrak 2002) and “The Oxford Romance or All Souls” (translated by Kai Aareleid, Varrak 2012), as well as a collection of writers’ biographies, “Written Lives” (translated by Maria Kall, LR 2010).
His recently published novel “The Infatuations” (Spanish “Los enamoramientos”), originally released in 2011, is Marías’s first novel narrated by a woman. True to his style, the author employs repetitive thoughts and quotes, constructs long sentences, delves deeply into controversial episodes of famous literary works, and questions truth, justice, loyalty, and reliability, all while bringing to the surface dark thoughts and obsessions. Based on the plot summary, the book could easily be classified under the crime or thriller genre. More information.
Attendance is free, and participants can buy the novel “The Infatuations” at the publisher’s price (card payment is also available). The discussion evening will take place during Iberofest, a festival dedicated to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries, with the support of the Embassy of Spain in Estonia and Toledo Publishing House.

The season finale of the Hispaania Maja book club is in many ways special and unexpected. Firstly, we will explore a genre that we haven’t tackled before: the graphic novel. Secondly, we’ll have our first encounter with the author, who is the current ambassador of Spain to Estonia, Guillermo Corral van Damme. And thirdly, the Hispaania Maja book club will embark on its first excursion, as the writer-ambassador has invited us to his residence in Maarjamäe.
An excellent opportunity to hear firsthand about the events and the book creation process, the particularities of the graphic novel, and the Spanish literary life! “The Treasure of the Black Swan” (translated by Kai Aareleid, Varrak 2023) is therefore an adventure graphic novel whose plot is based on real events and narrates how American treasure hunters seized a treasure from a shipwrecked vessel on the Spanish coast centuries ago, and how the Spaniards reclaimed it. Guillermo Corral van Damme also participated in the whirlwind of events and is the author of the book’s text, illustrated by the award-winning comic book author Paco Roca. Additionally, a television series based on the book has been created.
The conversation will mainly be in English this time, but wine will still be provided. Make sure to register, as the number of seats is limited. Directions will be sent later to registered participants.

Event Details

Event Details
NOBODY SLEEPS is a multi-disciplinary experimental performance blending physical theater, live music, and visual arts.
Departing from the themes of historical memory and socio-political forgetting in Spain, the performance problematizes the “Pact of Forgetting” of 1977. This pact, a political decision by both left and right-wing parties in Spain, was aimed at moving beyond the Spanish Civil War and the repression and crimes of Francoism, focusing on a democratic future under the motto “FORGIVE AND FORGET.” However, it is estimated that in Spain, there are still more than 4,000 mass graves containing the remains of over 114,226 individuals who were murdered, tortured, executed, and forcibly disappeared during the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship.
NOBODY SLEEPS immerses the audience into a highly symbolic, distorted, ironic, and grotesque historical nightmare born by collective amnesia; a dis-remembering that perpetuates cycles of trauma, violence, anger, suffering, war, and victimhood.
This project has received a Research, Creation, and Thought Award from the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona 2023.

Event Details
The Embassy of Mexico in Estonia and Finland presents the exhibition “Pluma y Plomo” in the Palm House of the Tallinn Botanical Gardens, featuring works by Mexican artist Emiliano Gironella. The exhibition consists of two parts. The first part of the exhibition will run from 11 June to 27 June, the second from 27 June to 18 July.
“Pluma y Plomo” is part of a larger project launched in 2019 to reassess the historical encounters between the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II and the Spanish Captain General Hernán Cortés 500 years ago. Mexican artist Emiliano Gironella has created 30 xylographic artworks inspired by this historic encounter, with the aim of encouraging new generations to reflect on and interpret a crucial period of Mexican and Spanish history from a contemporary perspective.
The exhibition pays homage to the historic Mexican botanical garden tradition, which was already remarkable before it became popular elsewhere. When the Spaniards, led by Cortés, arrived in Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec empire, they encountered magnificent indoor and outdoor gardens containing native flowers, medicinal plants, fruits and unique animals cared for by Aztec nobles. This exhibition highlights the beauty and symbolism of Emiliano Gironella’s art in this historical context.
The exhibition came to the Tallinn Botanical Garden thanks to the Grupo Andrade Foundation, a Mexican foundation dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children.
Visitors can view the exhibition daily until 18 July from 11.00-19.00 in the Palm House of the Tallinn Botanical Garden.
