Hispanic Literature in Estonian

The exhibition Hispanic Literature in Estonian has been compiled to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the speciality of Hispanic studies at the University of Tartu. It is dedicated to Estonian translators; more precisely, to those translators who translate from Spanish into Estonian. Naturally, it is also dedicated to Hispanic literature.

Luckily, there have been many of those who have translated Hispanic literature, and even more numerous are the books that they have mediated. Therefore, there was a wide selection of works to choose from, which, however, also increased the responsibility for the compilers of the exhibition. Not all of the most significant books could be fitted on the posters, and the same goes for the translators: inevitably, there are some that are not represented here. Thus, a selection has been made to include the most important translators, also bearing in mind the literary and cultural significance of the array of authors and their works. Neither was the chronological factor forgotten, so that the selected representatives would cover as varied periods of time as possible and, as a result, make this exhibition a sort of an overview of the history of Hispanic literature in Estonian. Originally, the intention was to select one book per author, but in the case of Gabriel García Márquez this proved to be impossible: he is represented by three novels, which, as a fact, also speaks volumes.

The first of the portrayed books was published in 1934, the last, in 2016. This gives us more than eighty years of the history of Hispanic literature in Estonian. These twenty-four books, however, are far from being the only valuable works that have been translated, edited, commented and published. This medley is based on both the contributions of the translators and the weight of the selected works and their authors.

Four translators, Aita Kurfeldt, Ain Kaalep, Jüri Talvet and Ruth Lias, stand out from the others for their special services and have their individual posters: Aita Kurfeldt and her Don Quijote and 100 Years of Solitude; Jüri Talvet and his contribution to Hispanic studies in Estonia, without which there would probably be no speciality of Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Tartu, nor would this exhibition exist; Ain Kaalep and his poetry translations; Ruth Lias as an example of an extraordinarily diverse and prolific translator of the highest quality. The younger translators are, in part, already offspring of the speciality of Hispanic Studies at the University of Tartu (Maria Kall, Helina Aulis, Ruth Sepp, Triin Lõbus, Mari Laan and Klaarika Kaldjärv).

The compilers of this exhibition set out to portray these books just as they were: sometimes torn and worn, wrinkled and stained, because they had been read by real readers. What better fate could there be for a book! Enjoy your reading!

Every day dozens of decommissioned school buses leave the United States on a southward migration that carries them to Guatemala, where they are repaired, repainted, and resurrected as the brightly-colored camionetas that bring the vast majority of Guatemalans to work each day. Since 2006, nearly 1,000 camioneta drivers and fare-collectors have been murdered for either refusing or being unable to pay the extortion money demanded by local Guatemalan gangs. LA CAMIONETA follows one such bus on its transformative journey: a journey between North and South, between life and death, and through an unfolding collection of moments, people, and places that serve to quietly remind us of the interconnected worlds in which we live.

THE BRIDE

Based on “Bodas de sangre” by Federico García Lorca, tells the story of a love triangle between two men and a woman. Two lovers carried away by their passion defying all moral and social rules even challenging their own judgment. The same day of her wedding, the bride and her lover escape on horseback to live their love. Their disobedience will have devastating consequences.

Discovered by Marco Polo in China, it arrives to Italy and from Italy to Spain and from Spain to America… It is a box of surprises that we find in many children’s parties. In this workshop we will learn a little about its history and how to play it in our parties.

It was about 15 years ago when I was trying to take the order of a big group of Spaniards in a medieval restaurant in Tallinn. It was at that moment when they were all enthusiastically talking over each other, filling the terrace with their laughter and trying to order food and drinks from me, that I listened in awe to this beautiful language and thought to myself “I want to understand what they are saying and I want to speak this language.” Slowly but surely this idea began to grow and seven years later I found myself in Spain amidst all of it and stayed there for nearly seven years.

Teresa Orjales Vidal. Ambassador of Spain in Estonia

The Ambassador of Spain in Estonia Dña. Teresa Orjales Vidal, will give a talk about the Spanish transition to democracy after the death of Franco in 1975. During this process, Spain left behind a dictatorship in order to transform into a democratic State regulated by a Constitution suitable for a democracy governed according to higher law.

The years of profound reforms to establish a democracy would not have been possible without the work of the responsible politicians and the Crown of the time, but above all, without the support of the Spanish people.

The talk will be in English.

Set in the historic and picturesque town of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwest Spain, “18 Meals” weaves together several stories taking place on the same day. Over breakfast, lunch and dinner the film follows an eclectic group of characters as their stories unfold over the meals of a day. The film immediately informs us that, every day, half a million meals are prepared in the small Spanish city alone. Many are small and inconsequential, though some take an unexpected turn to change the flavour of our lives forever.

The flamenco show Ivan Gallego& Arte Flamenco unites musicians and dancers from Spain, Cuba, Hungary and Estonia, all brought together by their passion for flamenco. The program includes flamenco, classical Spanish music and rhythms from South America.

Ivan Gallego is soloist and choreographer for Ballet Flamenco de Madrid. He has performed and worked in many countries including USA, Canada, Japan, China, Russia, Finland, Egypt, etc.

Maria Rääk is the founder of Arte Flamenco dance academy. She graduated from choreography studies in Tallinn University and learned flamenco in Amor de Dios academy in Madrid. She has also studied in various academies in Seville and Jerez.

Ivan and Maria have been working together for almost ten years, giving performances in Estonia and elsewhere, mainly in cooperation with Eesti Concert and the Embassy of Spain.

Fabricio Mattos is a Brazilian guitarist, born in the city of Curitiba, with extensive international experience of recordings and concerts. He started his musical career at the age of six and holds a master’s degree from the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he is currently following  a PhD program. Fabricio has already received the prestigious Julian Bream Award and is Artistic Director of the Worldwide Guitar Connections program. This will be his first performance in Estonia.

For his concert at the IberoFest, Fabricio Mattos will present some of the classic Brazilian guitar music of the 20th century, including works by Villa-Lobos, Dilermano Reis and Ernesto Nazareth. It is also planned a musical journey through the vast Brazilian territory, with compositions representative of some of the main Brazilian rhythms, such as Choro, Frevo, Samba and Milonga.

Iberofest classical music concert in Ammende Villa

The concert programme consists of a rich compilation of miniatures for violin and piano with special emphasis on Spanish composers pieces through different styles. From Falla’s exotic folklore to Bartók’s popular dances, from Debussy’s colorful impressionism to Sarasate’s virtuosity.

Adrián Bravo became a member of the Estonian National Opera Symphony Orchestra as Second Violins Soloist after his Master studies with prof. Mari Tampere-Bezrodny in the Estonian Music and Theatre Academy and Bachelor Degree in the Royal Superior Conservatory of Music of Madrid. As a chamber musician, Adrián has recorded for Spanish National Radio and currently works in different chamber ensembles and with flamenco artists.

Ashot Drnayan-Babrouski has been working as a vocal coach, orchestra pianist and accompanist in the Estonian National Opera and the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus after finishing his Master Degree in the Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno in his native Belarus. Ashot is very appreciated as a chamber music partner due to his versatility and impeccable playing skills.

Jorge Arena. Flamenco guitarist.

Flamenco is a concrete – and, at the same time, diverse – way of singing, dancing and playing music, as well as a way of being. The history of flamenco is shorter than we may imagine, but its roots run very deep into the past. In our presentation, we will try to take an overview from the very first crystallization of the forms we nowadays recognize as “flamenco” up to the most recent evolution of it.
