Event Details

SHAWI SANAPI is a photographic journey into the life of the Shawi indigenous women in the Amazonian region of Balsapuerto in Peru.

The Shawis live in harmony with nature along the Cachiyacu river, dedicating themselves to small-scale farming, hunting and fishing. Their culture is based on deep respect for nature, their ancestors and indigenous traditions. Though they are inevitably connected to the Western world, they feel no need to become part of it.

Indigenous people, especially women, still face much discrimination worldwide – for being women, for being indigenous and for their socio-economical status alike. The objective of the photo exhibition is to counter this by showcasing the Shawi women from a different perspective.

Anna Björnberg-Michelsson, the Founder of DREAMS, and renowned photographer Meeri Koutaniemi travelled to Balsapuerto to spend time with the women and get a glimpse into their everyday lives. By capturing their innate strength, courage and beauty on camera, they wanted to empower the Shawis and highlight how special and amazing they really are.

The exhibition is part of a collaborative project by DREAMS and its Peruvian partner CHIRAPAQ (Centre for Indigenous Cultures of Peru). All the photos can be bought in custom sizes, and 100% of the profits will be directed to the project’s welfare program.

The wider aim of the project is to improve overall health and nutrition levels, which are currently alarming. 97.6% of the homes in Balsapuerto have no access to drinkable water, and a large number of children suffer from chronic malnutrition.

There are 370 million indigenous people living in more than 90 countries across the world. In Peru 45 % of the population are indigenous.

Event Details

Tartu Opera Duet was born thanks to Germán Javier Gholami Torres-Pardo (Lyric Tenor Spinto), who is a guest soloist of Vanemuine Theater in Tartu, and Margus Riimaa (pianist of Vanemuine Theater) who works at Vanemuine Theater. The idea came from their different rehearsals together and also from the great complicity that Margus and Germán had together. Our repertoire is made from the greatest opera hits, best and well known arias for Tenor.
The repertoire that Tartu Opera Duet for this concert varies from the Spanish early music, Sephardic medieval Jew music to the well-known folk songs of Manuel de Falla and the Spanish Zarzuelas (the Spanish Operetta). So with this concert we can see the evolution of the Spanish music at its gold ages.

Germán Gholami was born in Madrid, Spain in 1985, starting with early age violin and later with flute. He studied music under the wing of his own parents, thanks to his mother María Ángeles Torres-Pardo who discovered his voice and developed it as a Tenor. He obtained BA as a music teacher from the University of Alcalá and also participated at University of Alcalá and Tartu Vanemuine choir (2012-2016). He has taken part in masterclasses with great teachers, as Berle Sanford Rosemberg (Bel canto master teacher and coach of the main Opera Houses in Hungary) and Jenni Antvelt (La Scala Theater coach and Giuseppe Verdi High Conservatory teacher). He is a freelancer singing in different places around Europe. Now he sings also with his family ensemble, Musical Universalis.

Margus Riimaa graduated from the Estonian Music Academy with a BA degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy and was accepted into Master’s Program. He studied under Professor Peep Lassmann in the two year Master’s program, but only completed one year prior to continuing music studies as a DAAD scholar in Germany. He also gained the Diploma in Piano Performance from Cologne University of Music in Germany and graduated the Program in Piano Performance as a Fulbright Grantee from the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Currently, he works as the Concertmaster in Vanemuine theatre Tartu, Estonia since August 2014.

Event Details

World premiere of “Estonian Suite” composed for solo piano and performed by Iñaki Sandoval, the director of Viljandi Culture Academy. The work will be published shortly by Bebyne Records (www.bebyne.com).

The music is inspired by Estonia: its people, traditions and culture, its beautiful nature and landscapes, forests, lakes and rivers, its peacefulness, winter, solitude and silence. Under the prism of jazz and improvisation, the language is closer to the classical and impressionist music of the 20th century with influences of minimalism, folk and popular music.

“Estonian Suite” invites to withdrawal, meditation and inner reflection, even to listen with your eyes closed. The piano is located in the middle of the concert hall, with soft lighting and the audience forming a circle around the interpreter. The proximity of the interpreter and the audience make it possible to listen actively and closely, receiving directly the vibrations of the strings of the piano without intermediation. This is when the music no longer belongs to the artist, but to the listener.

Iñaki Sandoval (1974) is one of the leading jazz pianists of the Spanish music scene. His brilliant career as a pianist has taken him to perform concerts and master classes in Spain, Europe and America. He studied in Berklee College and University of Nevada in Las Vegas and gained a PhD in musicology and art history in Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Currently he is the director of the Viljandi Culture Academy. Before that he was the founder of the Jazz department and the director of Postgraduage Studies in the Conservatorio del Liceu in Barcelona. He has also worked as the director of L’Aula y Música Moderna (international network of schools of Berklee College of Music) between 2004 and 2008.

Sandoval has performed and recorded with many musicians such as Eddie Gomez, Billy Hart, Bob Mintzer, Carles Benavent, Horacio Fumero, Peer Wyboris, David Xirgu, David Mengual, Joan Albert Amargos, Sizao Machado, Greg Badolato and many others. He has recorded four successful albums as band leader: Sausolito (2005), Usaquen (2008), Miracielos (2011), Electric Trio Live.

On 5th July, 1993, the cartoonist Peter Steiner published a cartoon in the New York Times where two dogs appeared in front of a computer. One said to the other: “On the Internet, nobody knows you´re a dog”. That way he formally portrayed the internet identity, which is the projection of what I show so that others form the image I want of me. Myself in a third state, that is to say: Me, the first, what others see in me, the second, what I let them see in internet, the third.

“Perro” the word in Spanish for “Dog”, is an exhibition of artists that qualify and reflect the identity in internet.

Varvara & Mar
Varvara & Mar is an artist duo formed by Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet in 2009. They have exhibited their art pieces in a number of international shows and festivals. In 2014 duo has been commission by Google and Barbican Centre for creating a new art piece for Digital Revolution exhibition. And last year their public art proposal for Green Square Library and Plaza in Sydney was nominated for the final stage. In addition to that, they have been on nonstop residency tour for three years. The artist duo locates itself in the field of art and technology and is concerned about the new forms of art, innovation, and also the application of knitting in the field of digital fabrication. They use and challenge technology in order to explore novel concepts in art and design. Hence, research is an integral part of their creative practice.

OPN Studio
Duo formed by Susana Ballesteros and Jano Montañés (Zaragoza, Spain). Both combine complementary training based on, Art, Design, Programming, Mechanical, Electronics and Audiovisual that clearly mark all their line of work. Their investigation reflects on the individual as a social being in a broad context. Their work unifies several fields: Art, Science and Technology, deepens topics as present as individualism, isolation, narcissism and social behaviour among others, through new technologies, such as electronics, robotics, video and interactive installation as the primary means of expression and direct transmitter, thus facilitating reflection by creating a more direct dialogue. They have made both collective and individual exhibitions in America and Europe, in countries such as Spain, U.S.A, Finland, France, Dominican Republic, Chile, Honduras, El Salvador or Mexico.

Vicente Vázquez / Usue Arrieta
Vicente Vázquez and Usue Arrieta met in 2001 in La Mancha plateau (Spain). Since then they do serve from the context and artistic films to launch its activity: Multidisciplinary based exercises redefining social spaces. “We try to establish approaches to the forms of the collective. For that we fix our attention on productive contexts where boundaries of modern work and leisure deployed during industrialization diluted, intertwining and feeding back. We use art and its tools to enable pathways ongoing relationship with the environment and build a way of life. Over the years the notion of closed roads projects gave way to more organic working, which extend and branch out in time forming a constellation of interests that act as a substrate of permanent activity that sometimes crystallizes into cultural objects”.

Javier Álvarez
Born in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in 1979, Javier Álvarez is specialized in experimental sound, video & installation based on a large amount of techniques, from circuit bending to algorithmic and generative composition, going through worlds seemingly far apart as the chiptunes and the concrete music or the field recordings, for example. His live performances are a mixture of all kind of built instruments and obsolete or modified devices, all of them live played, which makes of each performance a site specific piece. He performed in three editions of the Sonar festival (2001 as Bravido, 2009 as Néboa, 2010 as Fluzo), Primavera Sound (2011, as Dúo Cobra), La2 (Spain’s state-owned television, 2012 as Dúo Cobra), and in lots of related events as Kosmópolis, LEM festival, CA2M, CCCB, MUSAC, Casa Encendida, Radio 3, CGAC, Zemos98, Technarte.

Jaime de los Ríos
Born in San Sebastian (1982) and founder of the open laboratory of Art and Science ARTEK [Lab]; located in the center of Arteleku creation. His career focuses on the intersection of these disciplines and Systemics, in relation to the mechanisms, natural rhythms and patterns. Specialist Software and Hardware Free, we find in his work immersive environments as well as dynamic linking works natural behaviour with the computer. In 2010, he received the New Artists award and in 2012 the scholarship of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council for its facilities developed with new technologies. In recent years, Jaime has also been director and technical coordinator of Art-Futura. His works can be found in Arteklab.org
