“The Longe st Journey” tells the tale of the first circumnavigation of the Globe (1519-1522), an expedition financed by Emperor Charles V’s Spain, led initially by the Portuguese captain Ferdinand Magellan and concluded by Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano.

The exhibition consists of 15 panels showing the reasons, preparations, progress, misfortunes, hardships and “adventures” of the 5 ships and 245 men that set sail from Seville heading West and arrived, three years later, from the East, thus empirically proving the roundness of the Earth. Dreams and reality, calms and storms, all have their place in this amazing story of exploration, navigation and endurance.

Bear brothers Bluey and Tubby enlist in the army to exterminate the mythically hideous unicorns of the magical forest. The blood of the unicorns is said to make the bears’ plushy complexion smooth, soft, and eternally young – which has fueled the race war since time immemorial. But while the generals are whipping up the lust for war, a conflict is also brewing between the two brothers, who are really just yearning for their mother’s love and confirmation.

Alberto Vázquez borrows a deceptive Gummi Bears aesthetic to tell his carnivorously violent war saga with baby-blue rawness and jet-black humour – imagine the sweetly evil offspring if Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket had a teddy love child with Bambi.

Anna and Maxi have just found their dream house, which at first seems perfect and is even so good and helpful in a truly magical way that it gives them everything they want as soon as they say it out loud. But when they stop wishing for something, they quickly find themselves in a similarly hopeless situation as their previous owners…

Jesus and Maria are a couple going through a difficult time in their relationship. Nevertheless, they have just become parents. To shape their new life, they decide to buy a new coffee table. A decision that will change their existence. In many ways a truly daring and brave film that captures you from the first sequence and creates an atmosphere that will make you want to either escape or stay there and enjoy. Which is what can be expected from a merrily uncomfortable story far from political correctness.

Caye Casas has had a quite peculiar career, with metaphysical titles like “Nothing”, “RIP” and “Killing God” (co-directed with Albert Pinto), combining a diversity of original ideas which go straight to your brain. With “The Coffee Table” (his solo debut), he emerges as one of the most imaginative, surprising, and genuine voices among new directors on the international arena.

The protagonist couple goes through various ‘real life’ circumstances, all depicted with dark humour so borderline that it raises the question of whether you actually should laugh about it. Moreover, it also makes you wonder whether it is a comedy, a horror movie, a social drama or a love story. What is clear is that the filmmaker is able to use the most absolute realism to show the essence of true hell.

Open-minded (and dark deep inside) people: if you dare, this is your film.

Julio Blanco (Javier Bardem), the charismatic and manipulative owner of a family-run factory of industrial scales in a Spanish provincial town, meddles in the lives of his employees in an attempt to win an award for business excellence. Comedy directed by Fernando León de Aranoa.

On the occasion of World Portuguese Language Day the Embassy of Portugal in Tallinn will open the exhibition “Retracing the steps that were taken” – focused on the literary work by Portuguese Nobel Literature Prize Winner, José Saramago.

Spanish fashion designer Juan Duyos presents in the Estonian Academy of Arts his collection “Estonia” inspired by a midsummer trip to this country. The collection debuted in Madrid Fashion Week in September 2022. At this event you will have the opportunity to discover it with a talk by its creator and the screening of the show, as well as to see some of the designs.

Deep green forests and cool blue lakes, delicate summer wildflowers, the timeless traditions of handicrafts, powerful matriarchs, the endless solstice sunlight… all these bits and pieces of Estonia found their way into his designs.

On the afternoon of May 16, our teacher Julio is going to tell you all about that fascinating city and its surroundings. We invite you to come and learn more about the royal capital of Spain and also improve your level of Spanish.

The event is in Spanish. Admission is 5 euros and we ask for registration in advance on the Hispaania Maja website: www.hispaaniamaja.ee/ee/programm/  On our website you can read more about Julio.

Before and after the event, you have the opportunity to visit Hispaania Maja gourmet shop and bookstore. In addition, we offer coffee, tea and very good wines from Spain. Parking is free in our backyard.

Rafael witnesses Marina, a woman with a glass eye, being attacked on the street by Daniel, whom she has known since childhood they both spent in the orphanage. Rafael rescues Marina from Daniel and takes her to his home, where a relationship develops between them. Marina is pregnant but Daniel doesn’t want the child, so Rafael offers to be the father, being physically unable to sire his own. He and Marina stay together as a couple, then as a happy family. But once everything seems to be settled, Daniel–newly released from prison–shows up again

Libahunt, written by August Kitzberg in 1912, transports us to rural Estonia in the year 1800 and immerses us in a love triangle, inviting us to reflect on identity and our own attitudes towards those who are different.”

Javier Cercas (1962) is a Spanish writer and translator. Although young Cercas was noticed by several notable authors, including Roberto Bolaño, it was some time until his major literary breakthrough. It arrived in 2001 with his fourth novel Soldados de Salamina (Soldiers of Salamis). Cercas addresses the key issues of Spain’s complicated and violent recent history, using the, mildly put, colourful life of poet Rafael Sánchez Mazas.

Martin and Margot have been writers since they could write and lovers since college. They enjoy an adventurous life together and travel through Guatemala in an old rickety jeep that Margot constantly needs to fix. They fuel their relationship and writing with internal chaos and inconformity, hoping to eventually achieve success. However, they are soon confronted with responsibility they cannot run away from, and are faced with choices that may tear them apart in a way that neither Margot’s levelheadedness, nor Martin’s optimism can fix.

Jerónimo Pizarro is a literary scholar, Professor at the Universidad de los Andes and holds the Camões Institute Chair of Portuguese Studies in Colombia. He is brought to the HeadRead festival thanks to the central subject of his research, the Portuguese classic Fernando Pessoa. Estonia is undergoing a rediscovery of Pessoa, especially thanks to the great interest that his Livro de Desasocego (The Book of Disquiet) attracted.
