Event Details
As a part of Literary Wednesdays by the Estonian Writers’ Union the translators of Julio Cortázar – Ruth Sepp and Klaarika Kaldjärv – with an admirer of his work, the writer P.I Filimonov are having a talk dedicated to the publication of Cortázar’s short story collection “Cronopios and Famas” in Estonian.
“Cronopios and Famas” is one of the author’s most legendary and widely read works, this year marks the 60th anniversary of its original publication. “Cronopio is a drawing outside of frames, a poem without a rhyme,” as the author has defined in one of his interviews. The short fiction of the collection – like the works of Cortázar in general – are full of playfulness, absurdity, fantasy and genius. As well as practical tips, like instructions for crying or going up the stairs. Cortázar does not only play with reality but also with language and structure, certainly with the reader and the poor translator. Because of this the translation of his work is more demanding and maddening, sometimes also more intriguing, than usual.
“Cronopios and Famas” is published by Toledo publishing house and translated by Ruth Sepp with the illustrations of Allan Kukk. The talk will be held in Estonian.

On May 4, an outdoor exhibition of the Prado Art Museum “Prado on the Streets of Tallinn” will be opened in Kadriorg Park.
The project began in 2011 thanks to an agreement between the Prado Museum and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). In collaboration with several cultural centres, the exhibition has travelled to four continents: America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
The exhibition in Tallinn will show many of the main masterpieces of the Prado Museum: from “Las Meninas” by Diego Velázquez, to “The Naked Maja” by Francisco de Goya, through “The Annunciation” by Fra Angelico and works from the Spanish, Flemish and Italian painting collections. The exhibition aims to bring the Estonian public closer to the cultural identity of the Spanish artistic heritage, in a didactic way, and as close as possible to reality, as the paintings are reproduced on a 1:1 scale from high-definition images.
The exhibition is organized by the Embassy of Spain in Estonia, in collaboration with the Prado Museum, the Cultural Department of Tallinn City Council, the Estonian Art Museum, Kadriorg Park and the Department of Tourism of the Embassy in Helsinki.
The exhibition is placed in front of the Kadrorg Palace. It is free of charge and open all day. Visitors will be able to see the Prado paintings until 12 June.

Event Details
What do the Alhambra of Granada, the Teide National Park and the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) have in common? Not only they are three of the most known and visited places in the country, but they have also been recognized by the UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. Spain has about fifty sites that fulfill the tough criteria stablished by the UNESCO to become part of this list. In addition, about twenty cultural manifestations have been considered as Intangible Cultural World Heritage and more than ten documents have been inscribed to the documental heritage list, Memory of the World. Getting to know them all is a very interesting way to approach the history, culture, nature and traditions of Spain. For this reason, in this activity we will come closer to them from a historical perspective, but also from the point of view of a tourist who visits Spain to know all sides of the country.

Event Details
From May 10, it is possible to visit the exhibition “Botanical art of the Spanish scientific expeditions” at the Botanical Garden of the University of Tartu. The exhibition presents illustrations of South American flora made during Spanish scientific expeditions in the second half of the 18th century.
In the second half of the 18th century, Spain began a scientific program with the organization of scientific expeditions to study American nature. The impetus given to these expeditions was so important that seven scientific expeditions were organized, with the objective, among others, of “describing, drawing and forming herbaria of the plants that they discovered in those parts of South America”. The Spanish botanists and artists who participated in these expeditions formed outstanding collections of manuscripts, drawings and herbariums that are now preserved in the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid.
The collections of drawings made by the artists of the Spanish scientific expeditions constitute a unique botanical heritage, not only for their scientific interest, but also for their artistic, historical and cultural value. In 2010, these collections were recognized by the UNESCO´S Memory of the World Register for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The exhibition is a collaboration between the Embassy of Spain in Estonia and the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid.
The exhibition will be available until 31 July and can be visited with the entrance ticket to the Botanical Garden: https://www.botaanikaaed.ut.ee/et/content/hinnakiri

Event Details
As a special event of the Iberofest program in Hispaania Maja, we have Hispaania Maja’s students Kristjan Prii, Liivo Niglas and Tanel Rütman sharing their travel experiences. In 2002, six inspiring travelers started with an unusual idea of cycling from Ulaanbaatar to Nepal.
So far, they have already made five trips and they plan to cycle around the globe. Their last trip to South America began three years ago on the Atlantic coast in the small Uruguayan resort town of Punta del Este. Diagonally, across the continent and six countries – Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru – and across the Andes, they reached Lima on the Pacific coast. This summer they will continue as usual from where they left off, with the aim of getting from Peru to Costa Rica.
We will be talking about their last trip which was full of challenges but also bright emotions. We will also discuss whether and how it is possible to travel in Latin America without speaking Spanish and what the preparations are for the upcoming trip. Stories of friendship, being on the road, and overcoming yourself.
The event is free, but pre-registration on Hispaania Maja website is required.
The event will be held in Estonian. Before and after the event you can check the wide selection of books and Spanish flavors in Hispaania Maja shop. You can enjoy Spanish wine and different refreshing drinks during the event. Free parking in the backyard.

Event Details
Books translated from the Basque language are very rare in our country! But now in the Loomingu Raamatukogu, a short novel “These Heavens” by the most read and translated Basque writer Bernardo Atxaga has been published by Merilin Kotta. In fact, this is only the second book translated from Basque to Estonian.
This is the story of a 37-year-old woman who has just been released from prison and is on her way back to her hometown by bus. However, not all of his fellow passengers are on this bus by chance, and from the past to the future, they cannot be reached as safely on the motorway as from Barcelona to Bilbao. The woman’s past is a struggle within the ETA organization, but now she is trying to find peace and security to move forward by looking for support from books, memories and landscapes behind the window. The reader becomes part of a physical, mental and emotional journey that is also a metaphor for life and is filled with voices, dreams and longings.
The last book club of this spring still takes place in the comfortable rooms of the Spanish House, where the shelves of both the bookstore and the wine shop are at your fingertips. Participation in the book club is free, please announce your arrival on the website of the Spanish House. Both old and new interested are very welcome!

Marqués de Murrieta is a legend both in Spain and internationally. His Castillo de Ygay is an emblematic mansion, inspired by a French castle from 1852. The Marquis of Murrieta is one of the oldest winemakers in Rioja, Spain. In this region, Vicente Dalmau Cebrián Sagarriga, Count of Creixell, and a true gentleman from a noble family, has owned and managed the winery for 35 years. His wine has been recognized by critics as the best wine in the world in 2020.
We will have a videoconference conversation with the friends of Marqués de Murrieta. And of course we will taste the wines of these fine winemakers. The five wines that we will try together with Spanish tapas are ALBARIÑO PAZO BARRANTES 2019, PRIMER ROSE 2020, RESERVA 2017, GRAN RESERVA 2015 and DALMAU 2016.
