This edition of the book club invites you to discuss a socially critical and vivid eco-thriller by young Spanish author Munir Hachem, which takes the reader on a seasonal journey to the south of France. Four young friends come face to face with the harsh conditions of intensive farming and begin to question where our food comes from and at what cost.

The debate will be moderated by Mari Laan (Toledo Publishing) and is free to attend, but pre-registration is required.

Are you ready to put your taste buds to the test and let wine surprise you?

We invite you to a blind wine tasting, where you’ll discover the diversity of Spanish wines in a completely new way.

We’ll taste two white and two red wines, without knowing exactly what they are. We’ll compare, analyze, and try to guess the wines’ origins, grape varieties, and flavor profiles. At the end of the evening, we’ll reveal the bottles and find out our favorites!

The tasting lasts about 1 hour and is a great opportunity for wine lovers to deepen their knowledge of Spanish wines.

Wines will be poured and the tasting guided by VINOSFAIR sommeliers Maret Reimann and Aivar Lukk. The tasting will be conducted in Estonian.

The 8th Jornadas de ELE in Estonia will take place on April 26–27, 2025, at Tallinn University, bringing together researchers and educators specializing in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language (ELE).

Since its inception in 2013, this international event has served as a platform for educators from diverse educational and geographical backgrounds to exchange experiences and knowledge, foster professional networks, and promote ongoing teacher training.

The event is a collaborative effort between Tallinn University, the University of Tartu, and the Embassy of Spain in Estonia. This year’s edition is organized by the Spanish Language and Culture Section of the School of Humanities at Tallinn University (Guillem Castañar Rubio and Rafael Luis Salieto Gámez) and the Spanish Section of the Department of Romance Studies at the University of Tartu (Francisco Espino, Mari Kruse, and Virginia Rapún).

How well do you know the Spanish-speaking world?

Do you know which Spanish-speaking country is the highest above sea level? Which Mexican city’s central square is known as Zócalo and what was its initial purpose? Or how many official languages there are in Spain?

Come and put your knowledge to the test at a fun quiz night in Spanish, where we’ll take a symbolic journey from Madrid to Mexico – exploring the linguistic and cultural paths across Spain and Latin America.

The quiz questions are divided into different rounds and will cover:

• Spanish culture, history, and geography
  
• The diverse life of Latin American countries
  
• Music, food, and traditions from Spanish-speaking regions
  

The quiz will be held entirely in Spanish, but since it’s played in teams, even beginner-level Spanish learners can comfortably participate and challenge themselves. Come with your own team or join one at the event! Hispaania Maja bar is also open during the event so you can enjoy a variety of refreshments.

This year, the Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival (HÕFF) once again brings bold visions and strange worlds to the big screen. Among its standout selections is an intriguing Estonian-Spanish collaboration that blends mystery, sci-fi, and surreal summer vibes.

Tallinn University invites all interested persons to obtain information and free classes at the Department of Spanish Language and Culture. The classes will be conducted by students from the department itself. These classes are especially aimed at those students who are interested in foreign languages and other cultures and would like to learn about them. In these classes you will become familiar with university life and the Spanish language.

Food Film Festival – A journey of flavours and stories

The Food Film Festival is a unique cultural event that brings inspiring food stories and documentaries from around the world to the big screen. This year, the festival is part of Iberofest and the opening film of the programme is a Spanish food film.

‘Buda jumped over the wall’ is a visually stunning and emotionally rich documentary that follows Michelin-starred Spanish chef David Yárnozi as he balances life and taste between his two restaurants, Molino de Urdániz in Navarre and its near-identical counterpart in Taipei. The film explores how David replicates his culinary vision across the continent, while drawing inspiration from Taiwan’s vibrant cuisine, local ingredients and colleagues – notably the three-star Kai Host. A poetic, mouth-watering journey dedicated to cultural exchange, culinary excellence and the passion behind every plate.

Come discover Al-Andalus – a unique period in Spanish history when much of the Iberian Peninsula was under Muslim rule (711–1492). Was it a golden age of peaceful coexistence between the three religions – Christianity, Islam, and Judaism? Or does it mark a dark and conflict-filled era in Spain’s past? Or perhaps… something in between?

During this cultural evening, we’ll take a journey through time to explore the political and cultural history of Al-Andalus, its influence on both Europe and the Islamic world, and the lasting legacy it left in Spanish architecture, science, music, language, and cuisine.

Discover an era that shaped the crossroads between the Western and Islamic worlds – and whose influence can still be felt today!

The evening will be hosted by Merilin Tali, development manager at Hispaania Maja. Merilin studied history and has visited Spain numerous times, most of all in Andalusia, where she has also lived.

Renowned Cuban writer Leonardo Padura visits Tartu’s Prima Vista Festival!

Best known for his internationally acclaimed Havana-based crime novel, Padura brings to life the spirit and complexity of Cuba through his storytelling.

At the author’s evening at Tartu City Library, he will be in conversation with Anneli Ramos Põder, with interpretation from Spanish to Estonian.

Tallinn University invites interested parties to free information and language classes in the Spanish language and culture department, which are conducted by students studying in the department. High school graduates who are interested in foreign languages and distant cultures and who would like to study them as a specialty are especially welcome. You will become more familiar with both university life and the Spanish language.

Taking the stage from Laval Studio are soloists Maria Rääk, Evelina Esolainen, Veronika Esolainen, Kirke Kaldoja, Marion Kaldoja, and Arabella Hannilo.

ArteFlamenco has been active under the guidance of Maria Rääk since 1997. In addition to flamenco dancing, the studio also offers the opportunity to learn castanet playing, cajón, Spanish language, and to explore flamenco history and Spanish culture more broadly.

The studio’s choreographer, flamenco teacher, and dancer Maria Rääk graduated from Tallinn University with a degree in choreography. She has studied flamenco at the flamenco center Amor de Dios in Madrid (with scholarships from AEF and the Estonian Cultural Endowment), as well as in various dance schools in Seville and Jerez.

The high-flying mask-clad spectacle of Mexican wrestling comes to Estonia for the very first time! On May 10th, six fearless luchadores come to Tallinn. Gravity-defying stunts, intense rivalries and action-packed entertainment like no other, come witness the raw energy of Mexico’s iconic wrestling tradition! Little Emma is around four years old and lives in a shack without windows or even the most basic comforts. Every morning, her task is to carry a brimming chamber pot to the sewage pit and empty it – only then can playtime begin. When the woman they live with abandons Emma and her sister, the girls end up in a convent. There, along with 150 other orphans, they spend their days scrubbing floors, washing pots, mending and ironing laundry, and embroidering exquisite robes for church officials. None of them can read or know anything about the world beyond the convent walls.

Emma Reyes (1919–2003) was a Colombian artist who was born into extreme poverty and grew up illiterate in a convent. She later became a renowned painter, collaborated with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and spent most of her life in Paris. In 1969, she began recounting her childhood and youth in a series of letters to a friend – letters that together form a powerful, artistic narrative. Although fellow Colombian Gabriel García Márquez encouraged Reyes to publish her writing, she only agreed for it to be released posthumously. The book, comprised of letters sent over thirty years, was first published in 2012 and was named Colombia’s Book of the Year. It has since been translated into over 15 languages.

Everyone is welcome at the Hispaania Maja book club – whether you’ve completely read the book or are just curious to learn more. Our past discussions have shown that reading together helps uncover new layers and perspectives, making the experience even more enriching. And if you haven’t read the book yet, feel free to join for inspiration!

A timeless story of love and death. Francisco Sá-Carneiro meets Snu Abecassis on 6 January 1976. He is a promising politician, deeply Catholic, married and the father of five children. She is Danish, and as well as being the wife of Vasco Abecassis and the mother of his three children, she is also the founder of D. Quijote, a publishing house responsible for the publication of books that dared to defy the censorship of the Estado Novo. Sá-Carneiro and Snu fell hopelessly in love and decided to embrace that love to the very end, resisting the criticism and the multiple obstacles they had to face – both on a personal and family level, and on a social and political one. In a Portugal fully rebuilding from the ashes of fascism, this overwhelming love, far ahead of its time, would fight against all odds, indestructible, until death.

We’ll also discuss how the wine scene and Estonian taste preferences have evolved over the past ten years – and what the future might hold.

In the doctoral concert Marcelo Chacur Politano and Francesco Pio Russo bring to the audience a musical exploration that transcends traditional genre boundaries, integrating classical, jazz and folk music practices through intercultural dialogue. The concert will feature compositions by Marcelo Politano and improvisational approaches by Francesco Russo. Guest musicians will be Luiz Black, Karoliina Kreintaal, Katariin Raska ning Laura Lehto.
